Mission

The mission of the Social Science Department is to develop informed, thoughtful, and engaged students by fostering critical thinking, historical understanding, civic responsibility, and global awareness.

Vision

Through a rigorous and structured curriculum in history, government, economics, and the social sciences, students build the analytical, reading, writing, and research skills necessary for academic success and lifelong learning. Beginning in middle school and continuing through high school, students are challenged to evaluate evidence, consider multiple perspectives, and communicate effectively. Our program emphasizes college readiness and prepares students for success in Advanced Placement (AP) courses by cultivating intellectual curiosity, academic discipline, and the ability to think critically about the world around them.

High School Graduation Requirements

Under California law, students must complete three year-long courses in social studies/history during grades 9-12 to meet the state minimum graduation requirement.

These courses must include:

  • World History (typically one year)

  • United States History (typically one year)

  • AP Government and Politics (a one-semester course)

  • Economics ( a one-semester course)

Students must receive a C- or better to pass a course.
